A federal grand jury in Alabama issued an indictment with 11 counts against the far-left organization Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC).
The charges include six counts of wire fraud, four counts of false statements to a federally insured bank, and one count of conspiracy to conceal money laundering.
According to the indictment, since the 1980s the SPLC operated a secret network of individuals who were either connected to violent extremist groups, such as the Ku Klux Klan (KKK), or had infiltrated them on behalf of the organization!
Donors were unaware that part of their contributions was ending up with leaders and organizers of such groups, while at the same time the SPLC publicly denounced them on its website.
Between 2014 and 2023, the SPLC allegedly funneled more than $3 million to individuals connected to organizations such as the National Socialist Movement, the United Klans of America, and the Sadistic Souls Motorcycle Club, which is associated with Aryan Nations.
The contributions were intended to combat extremism, but part of the funds was used to finance exactly those whom the organization had pledged to fight.
Kash Patel, director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), emphasized that the organization is allegedly involved in a broad fraud scheme.
Those responsible, he said, deceived donors by claiming they would dismantle violent groups, while in reality paying them—and even using the funds to facilitate crimes at both state and federal levels.
Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche stated that “the SPLC manufactures racism to justify its existence” adding that the use of donor money to profit from members of the Klan cannot go unpunished.
The indictment focuses on practices that allegedly lasted for decades, including the creation of bank accounts under shell company names to conceal the origin of payments.
The informant program has now been discontinued.
These developments come after years of criticism of the far-left SPLC over how it classifies organizations and individuals as “hate groups.”
The SPLC itself has not yet provided a detailed response to the specific allegations.
In essence, the SPLC had the latitude and audacity to “smear without consequence” any citizen or political organization it chose – simply placing them in the same category as the Ku Klux Klan without being required to justify that classification.
