The progress of the construction works of the Northern Road Axis of Crete (BOAK) in the Neapolis – Agios Nikolaos section was reported by the Deputy Minister of Infrastructure and Transport Nikos Tahiaos, following a new visit to the project site in Crete.
As he said in a post, the project is being executed as a public project and is in full swing, with the first 10 kilometres of the new road expected to be delivered during the summer. The project is being implemented under the Recovery and Resilience Fund and is one of the most important road infrastructure projects underway in Crete.
According to the design, the new section of the BOD provides for the improvement and widening of the existing road network, with two lanes of traffic and an Emergency Lane (EL) in each direction, on a divided carriageway with a total width of 22.25 metres.
At the same time, the development of a complete network of transverse and side roads is included, as well as the construction of three unlevel junctions in the areas of Neapolis, Lakes and Agios Nikolaos.
The project also includes the construction of four double-branch bridges, one single-branch bridge, eight underpasses, and five partial and full lane coverage projects, along with retaining structures.
The interventions also include accompanying hydraulic works and stream and torrent regulation works, aiming to enhance road safety and infrastructure resilience against extreme weather events.
Mr. Tahiaos stressed that the project is progressing at an intensive pace, noting the importance of the BOAK for the upgrading of transport and road safety in Crete.
