Donald Trump has announced the appointment of US Ambassador to Turkey, Tom Barak, as special presidential envoy to Syria and Iraq.
In a post on Truth Social, the US president said the decision comes as part of Washington’s efforts to strengthen relations with the governments of the two countries, while Barak will retain his duties as ambassador to Turkey.

“I am pleased to announce that United States Ambassador to Turkey, Tom Barak, who has done outstanding work, will be appointed Special Presidential Envoy to Syria and, in parallel, Special Presidential Envoy to Iraq, as we advance our strategic partnership with the governments of Syria and Iraq and our relationship with them continues to strengthen!
Tom will remain Ambassador to Turkey and will act with the full support of the United States Department of State. We greatly appreciate the work Tom Barak has accomplished and his continued willingness to serve our country. Thank you for your attention to this issue!”
