Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, in his speech, sent messages of internal party unity, listing New Democracy‘s achievements during its seven years in government and criticizing those who either engage in populism or exercise unrealistic criticism in areas such as the economy and national issues. “New Democracy has not lost its soul” was one of the Prime Minister’s characteristic phrases.

Mitsotakis: The opposition troupe does not want to govern, but to exhaust Greece; New Democracy’s goal is a self-sufficient majority from the first Sunday

Kyriakos Mitsotakis sent a message of electoral readiness, with the goal of New Democracy achieving a parliamentary majority from the first round of elections, during the meeting of the party’s Political Committee. He launched a fierce attack on the opposition and outlined New Democracy’s political roadmap toward the 2027 elections.

“We are ready to fight another victorious battle for New Democracy,” stressed the Prime Minister and President of New Democracy, setting the tone for the coming period. He congratulated the 112 newly elected members of the Political Committee, noting that half of them are under 40 years old, while also highlighting the party’s more experienced members. As he said, the 75% renewal rate in the Political Committee “guarantees the party’s future” and confirms that New Democracy can renew itself, attract new members, and at the same time represent every period of its history and every current that has shaped it over time.

“New Democracy never loses either its soul or its stride,” he underlined, highlighting the party’s patriotic and popular character. As he noted, New Democracy proves this “not with easy slogans and from the safety of the couch, but through actions in the field.”

Addressing the new Secretary, Konstantinos Kyranakis, Mr. Mitsotakis made it clear that what lies ahead is “not a short sprint, but a demanding marathon until the 2027 elections,” urging him to “step on the gas for victory,” with goals including party cohesion, expansion, reactivating old friends of New Democracy, and attracting new ones. He also announced that he would once again travel throughout Greece, beginning with Rhodes.

The Prime Minister made extensive reference to the government’s work, urging New Democracy officials not to allow it to be forgotten amid everyday concerns. He reminded them that the government reduced or abolished 83 taxes, that more than 80 hospitals and 156 Health Centers are being renovated, that millions of citizens have access to free preventive examinations, and that more than 2,000 schools are being rebuilt. “We said it, we are doing it. Our work is not finished; it continues. We must not allow memory to move past these achievements,” he said characteristically.

At the same time, he emphasized that the successes of yesterday and today guarantee the success of tomorrow, referring to the establishment of voting rights for Greeks abroad, non-state universities, the reduction of tax evasion through electronic transactions, the reform of EFKA, and the digital labor card.

Describing the framework of a “Strong Greece,” Mr. Mitsotakis set out four pillars: a dynamic economy, a prosperous society, strengthened defense, and effective diplomacy. “There can be no economic progress without security, social cohesion, and international recognition,” he noted, stressing that the government is implementing the largest program to strengthen the Armed Forces.

At this point, he responded to Antonis Samaras without naming him, saying that some people question “the patriotism of responsibility.” “They are the ones who drown by themselves in calm waters, forgetting that we keep those waters blue and free,” he said, sending the message that the government chooses the patriotism of action rather than slogans.

The Prime Minister acknowledged that international inflation continues to pressure incomes and that islands of old-style partisan politics remain within the state. However, he stressed that the safeguards that have been built are not insignificant, making special reference to income increases, the return of one or even two monthly rents, the “My Home” housing programs through which more than 20,000 citizens have found housing, and the possibility of extraordinary support of €150 for families with children from the performance of the 2025 budget.

“The citizen’s pocket and the household budget are emerging as the highest priority. Macroeconomic progress must be translated into growth for households,” he stressed, noting that the government is operating within the country’s fiscal limits. He contrasted this with the majority of European countries, which are in excessive deficit procedures and are forced to increase taxes.

Mr. Mitsotakis also referred to New Democracy’s new program, which will be drafted by a committee under the coordination of Deputy Prime Minister Kostis Hatzidakis, describing it as “a new contract of responsibility with society.” As he said, the new roadmap will be based on the development of the national economy, strengthening the country’s deterrent capability and diplomatic reach, as well as institutional modernization of the state and public life. The political framework, as he described it, is encapsulated in the messages “Stability with Results” and “Change with a Plan,” with the slogan “We said it, we do it” serving as the foundation of trust for the next effort.

The Prime Minister was particularly sharp toward the opposition, which he described as a “comic-tragic Babel.” As he said, although the opposition forces speak different languages, they communicate through only one slogan: “Bring down New Democracy and Mitsotakis.” “Well, we will not do them that favor,” he said, accusing left-wing and right-wing populism of joining forces with those “who sell religion by the meter and patriotism by the kilo.”

“The troupe’s goal is not to govern, but to exhaust Greece,” he said in strong terms, accusing the opposition of portraying a country of misery and poverty. He even compared its current tactics to those employed before the 2023 elections, when, as he said, citizens gave “a deafening answer,” turning their gaze toward the future rather than the past.

Mr. Mitsotakis noted that he respects citizens’ objections, especially when they come from longtime New Democracy supporters, while stressing that the party has a duty to speak honestly about the critical nature of the current circumstances. “The election we will seek will be a break with the things that are wrong and the completion of a creative cycle that began in 2019 and continued in 2023,” he said.

Closing, the Prime Minister sent a message of unity and expansion, saying that in New Democracy “there is room for everyone.” He stressed that the party must reconnect with friends who became disappointed, as well as with citizens who had stood on the same side during the great battle of the “Yes” campaign. At the same time, he noted that there is strong interest in participation on New Democracy’s electoral lists, which will begin to be announced gradually.
