The Hellenic National Meteorological Service (EMY) has issued an emergency weather warning, forecasting locally strong rains and thunderstorms in parts of northern and central Greece.
The phenomena will be accompanied in places by strong winds (squalls), intense lightning activity, and possible hailstorms.
Specifically, heavy rain and storms are expected:
a. In Macedonia from late morning until evening hours, except for the Halkidiki region where the phenomena will continue until the early morning hours of Saturday.
b. In Epirus and Thessaly from midday until the evening hours.
c. In the Sporades and Euboea from Friday evening until late morning hours on Saturday.
d. In eastern Central Greece on Friday from the afternoon until the evening hours.
According to meteorologist Giorgos Tsatrafyllias of protothema.gr, instability will intensify on Friday, with strong thunderstorms, intense lightning activity, and possible hailstorms. At the same time, temperatures will gradually begin to decline.
More specifically, today, Thursday 11 June 2026, the weather will start with fairly clear skies in most areas. However, from midday onward, conditions will change over the mainland. Particularly in the Peloponnese, central mainland Greece, and Macedonia, local showers and thunderstorms are expected, mainly in mountainous and semi-mountainous areas.
Maximum temperatures will reach 33–34°C in mainland Greece and 30–31°C on the islands.
Winds will blow from northwesterly directions in the Aegean, locally reaching up to 6 Beaufort, while in the Ionian Sea winds will generally be weak to moderate.
In Athens, the weather will be generally fair. Winds will be light and temperatures will range from 20 to 33°C.
In Thessaloniki, from midday onwards, brief local showers are expected. Winds in the Thermaic Gulf will be light, and temperatures will reach up to 32°C.
Weather outlook for the coming days
On Friday (12/5), instability will increase across the mainland, especially in central and northern parts of the country. Strong rain and thunderstorms are expected, with intense lightning activity and a risk of local hailstorms. Temperatures will also drop. The phenomena during the warm hours of the day will also affect the Athens region.
On Saturday (13/5), rainfall will weaken and be mainly limited to eastern and southern parts of the country, while on Sunday the phenomena will cease. Temperatures will drop further and in most areas will not exceed 29–30°C. At the same time, the “meltemi” winds will strengthen in the Aegean, reaching 6–7 Beaufort.
