Greece is reportedly prepared to participate in an international operation to be set up in the Strait of Hormuz to remove naval mines placed in the shipping lane during the recent Middle East war.

According to the newspaper Kathimerini, Greece’s contribution to this operation—whose full details have not yet been finalised—will include a MEKO-type frigate already taking part in Operation “Aspides,” as well as a general support vessel, most likely the auxiliary ship Prometheus.

It is also reported that mine clearance teams will be deployed aboard the frigate to assist in the operation.

Although there had previously been discussion about extending the EU Operation “Aspides” mandate to the Strait of Hormuz, several EU and NATO member states are instead favouring a “coalition of the willing” model similar to that used for Ukraine.

It is worth noting that the frigate Psara is currently operating in the Red Sea, while Greece has also assumed at-sea command of Operation “Aspides.”
