Workers in several sectors are striking today, Wednesday, June 24, with protests planned in Athens, Thessaloniki and other Greek cities over pay, staffing levels, working conditions and new collective bargaining agreements. Public transport is expected to operate normally.

Workers in construction, food and beverage, catering and tourism, retail and regional government are taking strike action today, demanding pay rises, improved working conditions and new collective bargaining agreements.

Construction workers are holding a rally at 11:00 a.m. in Kanigos Square in central Athens, while protests are also scheduled in Thessaloniki, Patras, Agrinio, Ioannina, Heraklion, Kavala, Karditsa, Kozani, Rethymno and Chania.

Food and beverage workers will gather at 11:00 a.m. outside the offices of the Hellenic Federation of Enterprises, SEV, and will march at 12:00 p.m. to the Ministry of Labour. Similar protests have been announced in Thessaloniki, Chalkida, Kavala, Chania, Drama and Gastouni.

Workers in food service and tourism are also taking part in the 24-hour nationwide strike, with a rally scheduled for 11:00 a.m. outside the Ministry of Labour.

Retail workers in Athens are holding a work stoppage from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., with a rally at 11:00 a.m. at the offices of the Confederation of Commerce.

Regional government employees across Greece are also joining the protests. Their main demands include higher staffing levels, a 20% pay rise, the reinstatement of the 13th and 14th monthly salaries and the signing of a new collective bargaining agreement. Their main rally in Athens is due to take place at 10:30 a.m. outside the Ministry of Finance.

In Thessaloniki, three rallies are scheduled as part of the 24-hour strike. SETEPE, the union representing workers in food service, tourism and hospitality in the city, has called a gathering at 10:00 a.m. at the Electra Palace Hotel. Construction workers will gather at 10:30 a.m. outside the EFKA social security branch on Aristotelous Square, while food and beverage workers will hold a rally at 10:30 a.m. outside the offices of the Greek Exporters’ Association, SEVE, in Ladadika.

According to reports, public transport – the metro, ISAP electric railway, tram and buses are expected to operate normally.
