A paramedic has died after being stabbed at a house on the Greek island of Syros on Thursday afternoon, following an argument with a married couple who answered the door when she arrived at the property armed with a knife, according to local reports.

Shortly after 5pm, the woman, said to have had her face covered, went to the couple’s house and rang the doorbell. When the wife answered, a heated argument reportedly broke out between the two of them. The husband then appeared and is said to have stabbed the woman in the back.

The couple are alleged to have then chased their injured victim, throwing objects at her, until she collapsed in the road.

She was taken to Syros General Hospital, where she was pronounced dead. According to Michalis Giannakos, president of POEDIN (the Panhellenic Federation of Public Hospital Employees), the victim worked as a paramedic for EKAV (Greece’s National Centre for Emergency Care) in Attica and was originally from Syros, where she was on holiday at the time. She arrived at the hospital barely alive, still wearing her paramedic’s uniform and gloves, with a stab wound to the shoulder blade, according to POEDIN president Giannakos.

The couple have been taken to the police station and are giving statements. Police are investigating the exact circumstances of the incident and the motive behind the attack.
