Unsettled weather continues today – Highest-level alert for the Sporades & Evia

Severe weather persists with heavy rain and thunderstorms, while temperatures are expected to fall slightly and winds will strengthen over the Aegean

The severe weather continues to affect much of the country today, Saturday, with the Hellenic National Meteorological Service (HNMS) keeping its emergency bulletin for hazardous weather phenomena in effect. Heavy rain and thunderstorms are expected mainly over eastern mainland Greece and the Aegean. Red and orange warnings have been issued for several areas, as the weather is expected to be particularly intense in places. At the same time, temperatures will decrease slightly, while northerly winds over the Aegean will strengthen locally to 7 Beaufort.

The HNMS emergency bulletin for hazardous weather remains in effect. Heavy rain and thunderstorms are forecast today, Saturday, in the following areas:

  • The Sporades until the morning hours (red warning).
  • Evia (Euboea), mainly the central and northern parts, until the late morning hours (red warning).
  • The northeastern Aegean islands (Lemnos, Thasos, and Samothrace) until the early morning hours (orange warning).
  • Magnesia, mainly its eastern marine and coastal areas, until the early morning hours (orange warning).

Weather forecast according to the HNMS

Eastern mainland Greece and the Aegean are expected to experience localized rain and scattered thunderstorms through the afternoon, with conditions becoming severe in some areas. In the rest of the country, the weather will generally be clear, with only temporary cloud cover over the mainland during the midday and afternoon hours.

Winds will blow from northerly directions at 4 to 6 Beaufort, strengthening locally to 7 Beaufort over the Aegean.

Temperatures will fall slightly, mainly in the eastern parts of the country. In most regions, highs will reach 28–29°C (82–84°F), while locally in mainland areas, Crete, and the Dodecanese, temperatures will reach around 30°C (86°F).
