The sailing ban from the ports of Rafina and Lavrio remains in force due to adverse weather conditions, coinciding with the peak of the August getaway from Athens. Authorities remain cautious about how the situation will develop, with final decisions on Saturday’s ferry schedule expected to be confirmed this evening.

Speaking to ERT News Radio, part of Greece’s state broadcaster, Coast Guard spokesperson Theofanis Balatsoukas said the current three-day holiday period marks the busiest stretch for passenger traffic from Attica to the islands.

“No departures are being carried out from the ports of Rafina and Lavrio, and we are awaiting the latest weather bulletins to see how the schedules develop,” he said. “At the moment, most routes from Piraeus are running as normal. However, depending on the type of vessel there can be differences, so we advise passengers to contact both the shipping company and the port authorities.”

“For tomorrow, we expect the conditions to ease somewhat. We receive a new weather bulletin every six hours, and so far things do not look good, particularly for Rafina and Lavrio.” Balatsoukas added.

The Coast Guard concluded: “We will know for certain this evening. Nonetheless, if boat’s are said to be running, passengers need to follow the instructions of the port authorities, and should arrive at the port in good time, at least an hour and a half beforehand, longer if necessary, and even earlier if travelling with a vehicle.”
