Venezuela’s interim president, Delcy Rodríguez, assured the public during a speech broadcast on state television that the country retains control over its oil under the agreement it signed with the United States, nearly nine months after Nicolás Maduro was captured in a bloody US military operation in Caracas.

“One thing that must be absolutely clear: Venezuela retains ownership and sovereignty over its resources,” Rodríguez said, as she governs under intense US pressure, while the lack of details about the agreement is fueling intense speculation.

On Friday, US President Donald Trump announced that the United States is gaining “control” of 65 billion barrels of Venezuela’s oil reserves, stressing that this is the “largest oil deal in history.”
