The sudden death of Giorgos Mazonakis has sent shockwaves through Greece. The popular singer suffered cardiac arrest while at the Stem Cell clinic on Karneadou Street in Kolonaki, Athens.

According to initial information, Mazonakis had visited the clinic for a scheduled treatment. He had reportedly attended a preliminary appointment the previous day before returning on September 9.

The circumstances surrounding what happened inside the clinic remain under investigation.

According to the information available so far, Mazonakis experienced severe chest pain after an intravenous catheter was inserted and subsequently suffered cardiac arrest.

The clinic immediately contacted Greece’s National Emergency Aid Centre (EKAB), reporting that the singer had suffered a cardiac episode. The emergency call was made at 4:21 p.m.

Seven minutes later, at 4:28 p.m., an EKAB paramedic arrived at the scene by motorcycle and immediately began CPR.

An EKAB ambulance arrived shortly afterward and transported Mazonakis to Elpis Hospital, the nearest hospital on duty. He arrived at 4:45 p.m.

CPR continued at Elpis Hospital

Resuscitation efforts continued in the hospital’s emergency department.

Doctors performed CPR in accordance with the relevant medical protocol, but the efforts were unsuccessful. According to the hospital’s statement, Mazonakis’ death was officially confirmed at 5:40 p.m.

What happened before Giorgos Mazonakis suffered cardiac arrest?

The key question now is what happened between the time Mazonakis entered the private clinic in Kolonaki and the onset of the cardiac arrest.

At present, there is no publicly available medical or forensic evidence establishing that the cardiac arrest was caused by the treatment he was scheduled to receive, the insertion of the intravenous catheter, or any other medical procedure.

The sequence of events alone does not establish a causal relationship.

Further answers are expected to come from the medical records, the clinic’s documentation of the incident, EKAB records and the findings of the forensic investigation.

Investigators will also need to establish why Mazonakis had visited the clinic, what treatment had been scheduled, whether the treatment had actually begun and what his clinical condition was immediately before the cardiac arrest.

What Elpis Hospital said

In an official statement, Elpis Hospital said that Mazonakis arrived by EKAB ambulance at 4:45 p.m. without spontaneous breathing or a pulse.

Medical staff immediately began cardiopulmonary resuscitation in accordance with protocol. Despite their efforts, the resuscitation was unsuccessful.

The hospital recorded his official time of death as 5:40 p.m.

The statement from Elpis Hospital said:

“On September 9, 2026, at 4:45 p.m., Giorgos Mazonakis, born in 1972, was transported by EKAB ambulance without spontaneous breathing and without a pulse.

“Cardiopulmonary resuscitation was performed in accordance with protocol, without a successful outcome. Official time of death: 5:40 p.m.

“The hospital administration and staff express their sincere condolences to the family and loved ones of the deceased.”

What is the Stem Cell clinic?

The clinic where Mazonakis suffered the cardiac arrest specializes in regenerative medicine and related medical technologies.

According to information published on its website, the clinic focuses on the intersection of medical science and emerging regenerative medicine technologies.

The clinic is headed by Dr. Ilias Theodoropoulos, a physician specializing in internal medicine with research activity in hematology.

Investigation into the singer’s death

The circumstances surrounding Giorgos Mazonakis’ death are expected to be examined further. In particular, medical and forensic findings will be important in determining what caused the cardiac arrest and whether there was any connection to the treatment he was scheduled to undergo.

For now, the confirmed timeline is that Mazonakis suffered a cardiac arrest at a private clinic in Kolonaki, received immediate CPR from EKAB responders, was transferred to Elpis Hospital and remained the subject of resuscitation efforts until doctors formally pronounced his death at 5:40 p.m.
