Former Deputy Minister for Climate Crisis and Civil Protection Christos Triantopoulos is being referred to the Special Court for ministerial responsibility over the alteration of the site of the railway disaster at Tempi.

The recommendation by Deputy Prosecutor of the Supreme Court Dimitris Mitroulias to the Judicial Council of the Special Court for ministerial responsibility was accepted, and by judicial ruling Christos Triantopoulos is being referred for trial before the ministerial court on charges of breach of duty (misdemeanour).

The reasoning of the prosecution recommendation refers to works carried out at the crash site, including the resurfacing of the road with gravel and the covering of part of the ground with material which, according to the recommendation, affected the site before the required investigations had been completed.

According to the recommendation by the Deputy Prosecutor of the Supreme Court, the interventions were carried out without prior approval from the competent judicial and investigating authorities. The Deputy Prosecutor therefore attributes to Christos Triantopoulos a failure to prevent specific actions, despite the obligation arising from the position he held.

Alongside former Deputy Minister for Climate Crisis and Civil Protection Christos Triantopoulos, four other people are being referred to the Special Court as co-participants in the breach of duty. They include then Thessaly Regional Governor Kostas Agorastos, former Secretary-General for Civil Protection Vasilis Papageorgiou, then Larissa Police Director and head of and officer responsible for the scene on behalf of the Hellenic Police, Agapios Charakopoulos, and Thessaly Regional Commander of the Fire Service Evangelos Falasras.
