Anna Gunn has paid tribute to her “beloved TV son” and Breaking Bad co-star RJ Mitte, who has died aged 34. According to a representative, the actor died by suicide.
In a statement to People magazine, Gunn, who played Skyler White, the mother of Walter “Flynn” White Jr, portrayed by Mitte throughout all five seasons of the Emmy-winning series, reflected on their time working together and on “how lucky she was to play his TV mum”.
The 58-year-old actress said she would “never forget” meeting Mitte for the first time, when he was just 14.

“I was immediately struck by the depth and complexity of such a young person. He was kind and bold, exceptionally good-hearted and had an incredible sense of humour, a little rebellious, like every teenager, but at the same time eager to learn and develop his craft,” Gunn wrote.
“Above all, he was absolutely determined not to let his disability hold him back, but instead to turn it into an opportunity to raise awareness and educate others through his utterly authentic portrayal of Walter ‘Flynn’ Jr,” she added.
The actress went on to reflect on how important Mitte had been both to the series and to her own life.
“How lucky we were that RJ became part of the Breaking Bad family and lit up our lives. How lucky I was to play his TV mum, to watch him grow as an actor and as a person over the course of the series, and throughout all the years that followed, as he continued to give back to his community through his tireless advocacy for others and his charitable work. I was so proud of him. We all were.”
Gunn acknowledged that no words could adequately express the grief caused by such a profound loss.
“There really are no words to express the heartbreak of such a profound loss, the loss of a wonderful young person who had such a great impact on this world and still had so much ahead of him.”
Concluding her message, the actress chose to focus on the personal moments she had shared with Mitte.
“What I choose to remember and hold in my heart today are the quiet, personal moments I shared with my beloved TV son. Moments of mutual support and understanding, moments when we laughed until we cried and did silly things, moments of care and deep love. You will live in my heart forever, my dearest RJ,” she wrote.
Gunn ended her statement by urging anyone experiencing difficulties to seek help.
