The race is on for a leader of the main opposition New Democracy party with candidacies being gathered from noon on Friday, September 25, until 6 p.m. on Friday, October 2. Speculation is rife, however the only conservative candidate that has so far outwardly expressed an interest in the leadership is Kyriakos Mitsotakis who announced his candidacy on Wednesday.
Vangelis Meimarakis, acting leader of the ND since July 5, fail to win the September 20 elections and came under fire from the party’s right faction. Popular among party members and collagues due to his performance during the campaign, Meimarakis returned from Brussels on Thursday following a leaders meeting of the European People’s Party. He has yet to express his intent to run as a candidate.
Other candidates – such as Nikos Dendias – are biding their time, waiting to see whether Meimarakis will run for the leadership before deciding to submit their own candidacy
