Severe weather has caused widespread disruption on the Greek island of Skiathos, where torrential rainfall has turned major roads into fast-flowing torrents.
At the same time, flooding has struck southern Pelion, in the Magnesia region of central Greece, where swollen streams have overflowed and large volumes of water have inundated roads.
An emergency alert was issued through Greece’s 112 warning system to residents and anyone in the Platanias area of Magnesia, urging them to seek shelter on higher floors of buildings.
“If you are in the Platanias area of the Magnesia Regional Unit, move to higher floors due to flooding,” the emergency message stated.
Residents have also been instructed to follow the guidance of the authorities as flooding continues to affect the area.
Roads closed and landslides reported on Skiathos
On Skiathos, heavy rainfall has caused a significant rise in water levels in the Platanias stream, according to local news website skiathoslife.gr.
The road leading to Platanias has been closed after deteriorating conditions made it unsafe for vehicles to pass.
Residents and motorists have been advised to avoid travelling towards the affected area, refrain from attempting to cross flooded roads and follow instructions issued by the authorities.
Meanwhile, landslides have been reported along the road towards Koukounaries, creating additional hazards for drivers.
Motorists travelling along this route have been urged to exercise particular caution, as the continuing adverse weather conditions could trigger further landslides.
The severe weather continues to affect parts of central Greece, with flooding posing a significant threat in both Skiathos and southern Pelion.
