Greece’s population decreased by 21,592 in 2014, according to the Hellenic Statistical Authority (EL.STAT). More specifically, there was a decline in birth rates and a rise in deaths for 2014, according to the service’s data. An interesting finding is that civil marriages increased compared to religious ones due to the financial hardships facing Greek families, while there was a surge in civil partnerships over the same period. According to the figures, on average males tend to marry at 33 years of age, while females at 30. There were a total of 92,148 births in 2014, which was a  2.1% reduction compared to 2013. Of these 86.8% were born to Greek nationals and 13.2% to foreigners.
