A new police force will patrol tourist regions in a pilot program to be implemented in Athens and Thessaloniki. The program involves police officers on bikes to ride through neighborhoods of heightened tourist interest so as to provide tourist info, give directions and respond to complaints on the spot when necessary.
The new bicycle patrols were inaugurated during the opening of the 80th International Helexpo trade fair in Thessaloniki in September. They have helped present a friendlier side to the Greek police and increase the feeling of security at the area’s they patrol.
If successful, the cycling police will expand to otehr areas of tourist interest, such as Chania (Crete), Corfu (Ionian Sea), Nafplion (Peloponnese) and Rhodes (Aegean).
