Economy Minister George Stathakis is believed to be the minister who did not declare a million euros worth of assets to the auditors of Greek Parliament for the last three years. Deputies from within the Radical Left Coalition (SYRIZA) are keeping tight-lipped over the tax infringements that Stathakis had tried to “tidy” up with an additional assets statement prior to the September 20 elections. Opposition MPs however are calling for explanations as to the sum that had not been declared for three years.
The issue of two government ministers with assets infringements had exploded just days prior to the crucial voting of the omnibus bill in Greek Parliament.
On his part, rather than “clear” his name, Stathakis neither confirms nor denies that he is or is not the minister in question. Speculation has escalated due to the frequent contact that Stathakis has had with Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras over the last two days, especially an urgent visit to the government’s headquarters on Wednesday afternoon – the same time that the economics committee was due to meet.
Rumors surround Stathakis’ resignation from his post. Wuestioned about the matter, Stathakis told Proto Thema that he would not be making a statement on the matter. He denied that his visit to the government’s headquarters at Maximos Mansion had anything to do with speculation concerning his assets.
Stathakis cautioned patience when speaking to journalists. “Be patient, everything will be made clear in a week. I cannot, according to the law, make a statement prior to the completion of the audit,” he said.
