The deputy bank director in Greece’s National Bank, Yannis Zafeiropoulos, was arrested for bribery on Thursday, after he took cash from a businessman to facilitate the release of EU funds which had been approved, police said.
Mr. Zafeiropoulos was candidate Member of Parliament with SYRIZA in Arkadia district and was caught in the bank at 3:30pm on Thursday while receiving 3,000 euros from a businessman in order to release NSRF funds which had been approved. The businessman could not collect the money because of debts owed by the man’s deceased father.
Authorities also arrested two officers of the financial crimes unit (SDOE), an employee of the General Secretariat for Revenues and the banker’s wife in connection with the case.
