European Council President Donald Tusk’s praise in a tweet towards the Balkan countries for closing their borders to irregular migrants, and that this action was in line with the EU-28 decision on the refugee crisis has caused great controversy in the Greek political scene, with parties lashing out against Greek PM Alexis Tsipras.

Major opposition party leader of New Democracy Kyriakos Mitsotakis wondered whether Tsipras actually knew what he signed. Mistotakis said Tsipras’s so-called ‘humanitarian feeling’ was sinking in the mud of Idomeni, the refugee camp were tens of thousands of people are living in misery.

The center party ‘Potami’ (The River) called on the Greek PM to stop hiding behind a tweet and come clear and state whether such a decision was reached. ‘Union of Centrists’ (Enosi Kentroon) party leader Vasilis Leventis said he believed what Tusk had tweeted, as he trusted the Polish politician more than Tsipras.

The socialist PASOK party released a statement stressing that Donald Tusk made reference to a unanimous decision by the EU on the closing of the Balkan route which contradicts Tsipras. The statement concludes that whether Tsipras understood what he was signing or not, he is still dangerous for Greek interests. Finally, the Greek Communist party (KKE) blasted Tsipras stressing his stance was a ‘monument of political deception’.
