The Athens Andrology Institute published a study that reveals 8 in 10 men and 6 in 10 women are unfaithful to their spouses. The President of the Institute, Konstantinos Konstandinidis says couples falsely get the impression their sexual attraction to each other will remains similar to like when they met. ‘This does not last long’, he says. According to the study, one in three men between the ages of 45 and 55 take erectile disfunction pills, while 90 percent of men seek solution outside their marriage when they cave under their spouse’s pressure or they fear she is cheating on them.

The study cites ten mani reasons that couples seek extra-marital relations:

1. Erotic boredom that sets in usually after the first six months and peaks on a year.

2. The biological decline of androgens and the rise of oxytocin. Androgens are responsible for the erotic desire in both men and women.

3. The arrival of children, which leads to the increase in oxytocin, hormone that induces feelings of love and warmth, stemming male vigour.

4. The couples gradually develops a more friendly relationship, getting increasingly used to each others presence.

5. The transformation of the female’s role from a desired person into a ‘faithful partner and mother’.

6. The creation of friction and conflict over the most trivial things that is the result of mundanity.

7. The debunking of the ‘knight in shining armour’ myth of the male partner, and the realisation that he is not the lover, defender and outstanding alpha male the womb though in the beginning of the relationship.

8. The suspicion that when the man is out with friends he could be with a lover.

9. The ‘classic’ male indifference. After conquering ‘Helen of Troy’ he searches for new trophies.

10. The change in social and economic conditions with the man’s roles as bread bringer, father, lover morning into an financially exhausted person, while the woman changes into a defeated lover for house chores.
