Mitsotakis tells EPP colleagues Greek program not working in Brussels

Opposition leader held meetings with EPP leaders

Newsroom June 29 10:44

The leader of major Greek opposition party New Democracy, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, met with other European colleagues of the European People’s Party group (EPP) in Brussels (EPP) on the sidelines of the EU Summit on the Brexit. The agenda of talks included the negative impact of the Brexit, the positive message of the Spanish election results, as well as the difficulties Greece is facing in implementing the austerity program. In private and public talks Mitsotakis dubbed the decision by the British voters to leave the EU ‘unfortunate’, but added that their mandate should be respected. ‘It depended on Britain to make the right decisions in order for the withdrawal procedures to start’, he said, adding that the remaining EU 27 member states had to safeguard the union’s integrity. During his contacts with leaders of Europe’s centre-right parties, Mitsotakis expressed the opinion that the implementation of the Greek program was extremely difficult, while he also tabled his party’s proposals to drag Greece out of the current economic crisis and bring the country on track to economic growth. His political plan projected a smaller annual budget surplus of 2 percent instead of the current target of 3.5 percent, with a simultaneous 4 percent GDP growth rate. Meanwhile, ND officials were pleased with the results of the latest poll that showed their party lead by 6.5 percent over left SYRIZA, but were also concerned that the lead in the polls had remained stagnant for some time.
