The Greek who conquered Germany! Adam Christodoulou exclusive interview to NewAuto.gr (photos)

He dreams of driving an F-1 car

Newsroom July 15 10:45

Greek-British race car driver Adam Christodooulou was part of the winning team of this year’s Nurburgring 24 hour endurance race in the historic Nurburgring race track in Germany. The 27-year old driver talked exclusively to ’NewsAuto.gr’ about his victory and his early days as a driver. This year’s one-day race at the ‘green hell’ race track, as it is known for its demanding conditions on cars and drivers alike, was one the closest in recent memory. It was snatched by Adam’s team-mate Maro Engel on the last lap when he overtook a rival car from the inside of the track. The 5.7 sec difference between first and second spot is the smallest in the history of the Motorsport endurance event. Adam told NewsAuto that he started racing in 2001 in carts at the age of 7. ‘I got first place in my first race’, he says. ‘I won my first trophy and that was it. From then on the only thing I wanted to do was to become a racing car driver’, he remembers. He says he won 7 UK championships in the cart Open division. In 2007 he moved up to sports cars taking part in the UK Renault Formula for two years and was the rookie of the first year in the championship. ‘In 2003 I won the Formula Renault championship in the UK’. He then made the big move to the United States, where in 2009 he won the Formula Star Mazda in 2009, earning him an annual contract with Mazda. ‘In 2010 I took part in the American Grand AM, as a factory driver for Mazda with a RX8. We won a race and were on the winner’s podium many times’, he said. On his victory at Nurburgring Adam said it ‘was crazy’. ‘I started in 17th position and managed to climb up to 8th place before the heavy rain and the hail started pouring down’, he said. ‘You have to be physically ready and in good condition with lost of sleep the previous days’, he says. Responding on what his future plans were, Adam said it wasn’t easy to figure out right now. ‘I guess we will defend our title at Nurburgring next year’, he said. ‘I would like to get the chance to test an F-1 car, even an old one’, he said. Adam visited Greece a few years ago when he went to Kerkyra. ‘I probably have some relatives that I don’t know of. My grandfather went to the UK when he was young and settled down there’.
