Videos: Greek navy patrols Symi coast for fear of Turkish rebel commandos landing

Six military helicopters deployed to three Greek islands

Newsroom July 22 09:01

Protothema.gr is publishing three videos showing the heightened state of alert of the Greek military, following reports that a group of rebel Turkish commandos involved in a failed attempt to assassinate Turkish President Recep Erdogan during last week’s coup, would try to cross into Greek territory and escape prosecution in their country. As protothema.gr reported, a total of six military helicopters were urgently deployed to the three Greeks islands of Rhodes, Leros and Kos to assist Greek navy ships in surveillance operations from sea and air, while a Greek special forces unit was also mobilised for the same purpose. The Greek government fears a repeat of the incident in the northern city of Alexandroupolis, where eight Turkish servicemen, who are reportedly involved in the coup attempt, illegally entered Greece with a military helicopter and applied for political asylum. The videos show two Greek navy ships patrolling the waters off the coast of the island of Symi, where the commandos would reportedly try to land on, while a Greek helicopter can be seen flying overhead. While the Greek Defence Ministry has denied there were any air space violation by Turkish F-16 on July 20, which were reportedly seeking any suspicious movements in the Aegean, it has set the readiness alert to orange.
