New clashes between groups of refugees and migrants of different nationalities broke out on Monday evening inside the Moria hot spot in Lesvos, police said. Around 4,000 asylum seekers have escaped the camp in the Aegean island of Lesbos.

The blaze at the Moria camp has left a trail of destruction including damaged tents and housing units.

A police source said there was “no doubt” the fire that ripped through the facility had been started by a number of migrants who lived there.
The insider said the strong winds were fanning the flames and added: “Between 3,000 and 4,000 migrants have fled the camp of Moria”.
More than 5,000 migrants live in Lesbos, which was the main destination for more than one million asylum seekers who reached the Greek shores from Turkey since the escalating crisis erupted in 2015.
There are over 13,000 people on five islands in facilities built to house fewer than 8,000, according to Government information.
Some 150 children were evacuated to a children’s village on the island.
Emergency services said the fire is now under control but volunteers are still working to distribute water and help to families.
Officials said: “There was tension in the evening. Our main concern is the safety of the people. The fire is quite big.”Lifeguards Hellas said the fire was now under control but they were still working to distribute water and help the families in total darkness.
