A “coughing” of the engine during the critical phase of take-off was the warning sign that something was wrong with the two-seat amphibious aircraft Aventura Ultralight. In the split seconds that followed before withdrawn completely, the two pilots did not have time to react …

The only thing that the 52 year old operator Dimitris Helas and the 35 year old aircraft engineer Panagiotis Chronopoulos before they lose their lives, was to press the lever that releases the parachute aircraft parachute which reduces the momentum of a possible fall. That is why it was found open initially creating the impression that one of the passengers triggered it accidentally. However, the aircraft was flying at a low altitude, so they the parachute didn’t have enough time to open in order to prevent the crash.

As the chairman of the Accident Investigation and Aviation Safety Mr. Athanasios  Binis  revealed to protothema.gr  that the engine problem occur after the aircraft was detached from the runway of the municipal airport Pyri in Sparta.

“He tilted left and went up, but almost immediately the engine stopped working ,  as the only eyewitness, a friend of the victims who had stayed on the ground  stated… “he says.

The aircraft, which has completely dissolved, has been transported in the former American base of ‘Eliniko’ airport, where experts will thoroughly search for the cause of the loss of two people on Saturday morning.

Mr. Binis also said that: “We took samples of fuels and oils and we will send them for analysis. Moreover, we will sent to special workshops samples from the frame and the material covered by the airplane to determine their quality and whether they had suffered some damage that may have been cause of the decline. At the same time, we expect the results of the autopsy and toxicological tests that were done on the victims … ”

The Commission’s role is not to give any responsibility for the tragedy, but to investigate the causes that provoke it and to inform the aviation services and the aviation companies to be more careful. If there are responsibilities to persons or entities, that will be done by the local police authorities conducting the questioning.
