Solar-powered ramps at beaches around Greece

Solar-powered ramps allow people with disabilities to have easy access to beaches

Newsroom August 7 11:55

The needs of wheelchair-users and cane-users aren’t addressed very effectively in Greece. Recently, there are small baby steps being taken to improve the situation for travelers and Greeks alike. An opportunity was offered for disabled beach-goers at Nea Makri Beach thanks to a high-tech system known as SEATRAC that has already installed special wheelchair ramps at 20 beaches. The ramp, donated by TOBEA, operates on solar energy and is a permanent fixture at the beach from the start of summer to fall giving handicapped people the ability to enjoy an outing at the beach that other swimmers take for granted. Unfortunately, coastal guards came to investigate the new fixture after beach-goers complained that it was spoiling the scenery. What do you think? Is a ramp uglier than the face of social exclusion?

Beaches with SEATRAC ramps:
* Ayia Napa (Cyprus) * Ayios Vasilios * Akoli * Akrata * Alepohori * Anavyssos * Asprovalta * Asproneri * Velika * Glyfada * Keratea * Lemessos (Cyprus) * Loutsa * Nea Makri * Nei Epivates * Paphos (Cyprus) * Patras EOT Beach * Porto Rafti * Protaras (Cyprus) * Rahes * Salamina * Hrysohous (Cyprus)
