Zongolopoulos’ 'Poseidon' will be permanently installed in the George Washington University campus

A parallel exhibition dedicated to George Zongolopoulos will take place on the premises of the Milken School of Public Health

Newsroom September 3 02:15

The imposing stainless steel work entitled “Poseidon” by world-renowned Greek sculptor George Zongolopoulos will be permanently installed in George Washington University campus, Washington DC on October 1. More specifically, “Poseidon” will be installed near the new Milken School of Public Health building.

The 3.90-meters-tall sculpture, donated by the George Zongolopoulos Foundation in Athens, was originally part of the award-winning sculptural synthesis with water jets that George Zongolopoulos created in 1960 for Omonia Square in downtown Athens. However, this imposing synthesis was never placed in the square as was initially planned.

In a press release, George Zongolopoulos Foundation noted that many sculptures by the famous sculptor appear in public spaces in Greece and abroad, such as the impressive mobile sculpture “Umbrellas”.

The inauguration of “Poseidon”, to be held under the auspices of the President of the George Washington University on October 1, 2014, will be attended by prominent Greeks who live in America and other prominent individuals including curators of major museums, distinguished personalities of the Arts and the Sciences, academics, etc.

At the same time, on the premises of the Milken School of Public Health at the George Washington University, a parallel exhibition dedicated to George Zongolopoulos will take place with a selection of photos of his iconic large scale sculptures.
