30 Russian MPs’ and a few journalists are expected to travel to the island on the occasion of one of the largest internationally Russian-Greek Social Forums carried out since 2002, while this year is scheduled for the weekend of 28-30 of September.
“Russian Week in the Ionian Islands” aims to strengthen the spiritual and historical ties between Russia and Greece. As stated by the new mayor of Lefkada, Mr. Kostas Drakontaeidis in protothema.gr: «On the occasion of the forum this week, we give great importance to a cultural level and not only, while considering the need to further develop relations between the two countries. It is the beginning of a new initiative towards the development of relations between the two countries. ”
The forum reveals to the Russian as well as to the Greek society the role of Russia in the establishment of the independent Greek state through the efforts of Admiral St. Theodore Ousakof. Since the two countries have a common denominator which is no other than culture and traditions, is an ideal way to bring people of both sides closer.
As part of the forum there will be a series of events, such as, parades, functions, gala concerts, conferences, exhibitions, festivals, and sporting events while the council has already approved the cost of hosting the Russian mission.
The organizers on the Russian side are the World Russian People’s Summit and the Monastery of St. Daniel in the city of Moscow, with the support of the Embassy of the Russian Federation in Greece and the Honorary Consul of the Russian Federation in the Ionian Islands. Also, the sailors, the military orchestra and choir of the Black Sea Fleet will participate in the events forum.
