Mitsotakis on MSNBC for Erdogan: No time for bargains in NATO

"Greece is a reliable ally of the United States and we will talk about the strengthening of our relations"

Newsroom May 16 04:31

The Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, who is paying an official visit to the USA and will meet tonight with the American President, Joe Biden, gave an interview to the MSNBC television network.

The Prime Minister spoke on Morning Joe about Turkey, the war in Ukraine, the government’s priorities and what he will discuss with the US President.

The Prime Minister said that this visit is important for him and Greece because “it marks the celebration of the 200th anniversary of the Greek Revolution. It was to take place last year and was postponed due to the pandemic for this year. I will have the opportunity to address Congress. It is an opportunity to celebrate the path of two living democracies”.

“Greece is a reliable ally of the United States and we will talk about the strengthening of our relations but also the war in Ukraine and the consequences it has for the European continent,” he said, referring to what he will discuss with the American President.

Regarding Turkey’s stance on Finland and Sweden’s application for NATO membership, he said: “You should ask the President of Turkey. Greece supports the accession of Finland and Sweden. If you ask me, this is not the time to bargain for other issues one may want to achieve, I expect the issue to be resolved“.

He also stressed that Europe is united against the Russian invasion. “We have moved very quickly to impose tough sanctions and I look forward to the European response. Borders are being redefined by force and this cannot happen in the 21st century”.
