Following its application for NATO membership, Sweden has allowed again the export of weapons and military equipment to Turkey, the Swedish military export authority announced today.

The lifting of these restrictions was one of the conditions set by Ankara for the Scandinavian country’s entry into the Western military alliance – an entry which would necessarily have to receive Turkey’s approval.

Sweden had moved to revoke its arms sales licenses to Turkey in October 2019, when the Erdogan government launched a cross-border operation in Kurdish-held territory in Syria. At the time, Sweden’s foreign minister, Anne Linde, accused Turkey of “violating international law”.
