Erdogan hints at Turkish election date as May 14

The Turkish economy has been in dire straits with the country's political leaders trying to export its domestic issues by adopting bellicose rhetoric against Greece in the Aegean Sea

Newsroom January 18 12:44

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan “hinted” at the date of the elections in Turkey, speaking to the Parliamentary Group of the Justice and Development Party.

Based on what the Turkish President said, it seems likely that the elections will take place on May 14, a symbolic day pointing to the day Turkey held its first free elections in 1950. As he mentioned, “the late Menderes had said on May 14, 1950 ‘enough! The nation has spoken’ and won by an overwhelming majority”. And now our nation will say “enough” to the coup plotters on the same day 73 years later.”

Erdogan also said that no election battle is easy but he is ready to give everything in this contest as well.

“Our biggest problem is inflation,” said the Turkish president, who aims to drop the rate to 30% in the coming months.

President Erdogan pointed to the date of May 14 for the election:

“Deceased Menderes came out victorious on May 14, 1950. Our nation will once again say ‘enough’ to these coup plotters, who appear on the same day, 73 years later, saying the 6-way table.” pic.twitter.com/wQC5LnwVPe
