Russian Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu has travelled to the zone of operations in Ukraine to inspect a command centre and meet with senior military officials, the Russian Armed Forces said in a statement today.

Shoigu was presented with a report on the current situation on the front and he “thanked commanders and military (…) for successful attacks” in the Lyman region in eastern Ukraine, the Russian armed forces added in the statement, without specifying when the visit took place.

In the TV images broadcast by the Russian Defence Ministry, Shoigu is shown in military uniform listening to a report presented by General General Andrei Mordvichev, who is the commander of the Tsentr (“Centre”) military unit in the zone of Russian operations in Ukraine.

The Russian defence minister was also shown a Swedish CV90 infantry fighting vehicle, “one of the armoured vehicles seized in the battles” by Russian forces from the Ukrainian army, according to the Russian Defence Ministry.

Shoigu’s most recent visit to the front was in late June. In a video broadcast by the Russian military, he was then shown inspecting Russian forces in Ukraine, days after the failed uprising of the Russian mercenary organisation Wagner.
