Plaques of gold worth over $300 million are estimated by analysts to be in the wreck of SS Central America at the bottom of the Atlantic, 160 nautical miles off the coast of South Carolina.

The ship was lost in 1857 after a storm, causing a massive outflow of bank deposits and a financial crisis in the USA.

More than 130 years have passed since then when the ship was discovered again, and 157 years passed since the first objects were retrieved from the seabed.

Odyssey Marine Exploration, which has undertaken the rights of recovering the gold has already announced that it has retrieved five gold plates weighing from 96.5 to 313.5 ounces.

Two gold coins with the American eagle on both sides, a bottle and other trifles were also recovered from the inside of the vessel.

Research with special robotic submarines – due to the depth- is ongoing, and analysts combine historical data on the ship’s cargo and the impact it had caused to the economy, to estimate a current worth of approximately 336 million U.S. dollars.
