The highest compensation, so far, at the expense of Turkey’s invasion of Cyprus in 1974 was decided upon, on Monday by the European Court of Human Rights, calling on Ankara to pay the sum of 90 million euros to Nicosia.

According to Turkish channel NTV, 30 million will go to the relatives of missing Cypriots.

The previously considered as highest compensation of 13 Million euros was imposed on 2009 by the same court.

Analysts, according to Hurriyet, declare that this decision may affect the fragile peace process.

Before the sentence’s announcement, Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu had made certain to state the Turkish government’s position, by saying that under international law the penalty is not binding to his country.

The decision was made on the basis of 14 violations of the European Convention on Human Rights.

The violations included:

Article 2 for the right to live

Article 3 on torture

Article 5 for the security of any persons and freedom

Article 6 for the right to a fair trial

Article 8 for respect for private and family life

Article 9 on freedom of religion and conscience
