Dora Bakoyannis: What Dimitris Koufodinas told her about the murder of Pavlos Bakoyannis

"I don't think this wound ever heals. Some people came to me and said, 'you will forgive' and I replied, 'The priests forgive, God forgives, I don't'."

Newsroom March 15 09:38

On Thursday night, Dora Bakoyannis revealed the dialogue she had with the executioner of the extreme-left terrorist organization “17 November” during the trial, discussing the murder of Pavlos Bakoyannis with 13 bullets.

She said, “The years after the murder (of Pavlos Bakoyannis) were very, very difficult. For me, Pavlos’ murder was the worst thing I’ve ever experienced in my life. Everything else pales in comparison. I could never imagine that it would be possible for a person to be shot 13 times in the back and be murdered like that, in the way Pavlos was murdered”.

“He was a consensus person, and that’s why he was murdered, they told me that during the trial. I asked Koufodinas, and he says to me, ‘he shouldn’t had done national reconciliation’. That’s what drives you crazy! Well, everything drives you crazy”, Mrs. Bakoyannis added.

She confessed, moreover, that “now, looking back, I realize how bad of a mother I was at that time because my children supported me, I didn’t support them. I wasn’t able to support my children. This weighs very heavily on me, and it’s the first time I’m saying it. But I have tremendous guilt about it. I wasn’t able to, I simply couldn’t. Alexia and Kostas supported their mom instead of doing what was right. It was a very difficult period, I wouldn’t wish it on my worst enemy”.

At the same time, she clarified, “I don’t think this wound ever heals. Some people came to me and said, ‘you will forgive’ and I replied, ‘The priests forgive, God forgives, I don’t’. There’s no chance I’ll ever forgive, there’s never a chance that a day will come when I discuss this matter and it doesn’t come back with all its force. Of course, time heals all wounds, as they say, but there are some wounds that always remain open”.

In the same interview, Dora Bakoyannis also spoke about her acquaintance with Pavlos Bakoyannis, whom she met in Paris: “He had come to meet my father. There was a connection, and I started falling in love with him madly. He was a charming man, an intelligent man, a crazy love. He treated me like a porcelain doll. It was one of the ‘problems'”.
