Ersin Tatar: Without common ground, no meaning to begin negotiations on the Cyprus Issue – Monologue by the Turkish Cypriot leader during his meeting with the UN Secretary-General

He appeared unyielding setting sovereignty equality and equal international status as a precondition for negotiations

Newsroom May 8 07:08

Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar emphasised that restarting negotiations on the Cyprus Issue requires common ground, highlighting the importance of recognising Turkish Cypriot sensitivities. He reiterated his stance on sovereign equality and equal international status as prerequisites for talks. Tatar accused the Greek Cypriot side of needing a mindset shift and recognising Turkish Cypriot rights. He emphasised the need for a solution based on cooperation between two states and refused to succumb to pressure, asserting that leaders will not engage in dialogue without addressing these fundamental issues.

Mr. Tatar highlighted the non-negotiable nature of Turkish Cypriots’ inherent rights, sovereignty, and equal international status during discussions with the Turkish Foreign Minister and the UN envoy. He stated that without meeting these criteria, they will not engage in negotiations. Underlining the lack of common ground, he criticised the Greek Cypriot side’s actions and underscored the importance of establishing Turkish Cypriots’ rights. He reiterated the need for a change in mindset and stressed that any future agreement must be based on the cooperation of two states. Without accepting their new policy, he stressed that returning to the negotiation table would be pointless. Indirectly responding to Mrs. Olguin, Mr. Tatar expressed that some NGOs express their views, on the other hand, what binds their state are the decisions made by the people’s struggle, and the relations with Turkey. Mrs. Olguin went on to express what Cyprus has experienced in the last 50 years highlighting the injustices and the lack of a solution in Cyprus.
