Margheritis Schinas: Furious with the EBU for Eurovision – I will ask for explanations

EU officials are annoyed by the ban of EU's flag during the contest - It's outrageous, said the Greek Vice President of the Commission

Newsroom May 13 01:55

The ban on the European Union flag at the Eurovision contest has sparked reactions and frustration in Brussels. Greek Vice President Margaritis Schinas criticized the decision, calling it outrageous and questioning its logic, suggesting it may benefit only Euroskeptics and enemies of Europe. Schinas affirmed to seek explanations from the organizers. The President of the Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, also expressed displeasure, noting the EU flag’s significance as a symbol of all member states and expressing regret over its exclusion from the event.

The EBU’s Response

The Commission’s protest is the cherry on top of this year’s Eurovision, which had a huge backstage. The EBU argued that nothing has changed in its policy. Much like in previous contests, viewers could have their country’s flag and the rainbow flag. Reality is somewhat different. In videos from last year, one can easily spot European Union flags in the stands.
