An old Tunisian village turned into an open-air gallery

150 artists from 30 countries around the world created beautiful murals and graffiti on the walls of houses and shops

Newsroom October 16 02:00

Erriadh, a small village on the island of Djerba in Tunisia, has remained unknown until 150 artists from 30 countries around the world visited it last summer and transformed it into a uniquely amazing open-air gallery.

From June 2014, the artists participated in this massive public street art exhibition, Djerbahood, and created murals and graffiti on the walls of houses and shops. In September the village welcomed this extraordinary neighbourhood which will become the most interesting museum of street art.

Mehdi Ben Cheikh, founder of the French Galerie Itinerrance and organizer of the event, had first to ensure legal authorization from the government and private land owners before beginning the project.

“Muslims, Christians and Jews have lived here in peace for the last 2,000 years or so,” Ben Cheikh told the New York Times. “I’m not here to aggravate anyone, but to consolidate this aspect, which I find beautiful, and together with the natural beauty of the village, provides the artists with a unique canvas.”
