It presents photographs as well as postcards, magazines, etc., which transpose us to the atmosphere and urban setting of the ’60s.

Newsroom October 16 05:50

The Hellenic American Union presents in cooperation with Hellenic American College an exhibition of photographic and archival material, entitled “Athens. The Spirit of the ’60s: A changing capital,” curated by journalist Nikos Vatopoulos.

The exhibition will run from November 3 to December 13, 2014 at the Kennedy Gallery, located in the Hellenic American Union and the opening ceremony will take place on Monday, November 3, 2014, at 20:30.

According to the Hellenic American Union’s official site, the subject matter of the exhibit is the “modern” capital that was spawned during the economic boom. It presents photographs originating mostly from private archives, as well as postcards, magazines, etc., which transpose us to the atmosphere and urban setting of the ’60s.

Particular emphasis is placed on the social change which transpired between the late ’50s and the imposition of the dictatorship in 1967. The new buildings—many of which became landmarks, such as the Athens Hilton—, the new mores, consumerism, connection with the international tourist networks, are some of the themes showcased by Nikos Vatopoulos, who curated the exhibit’s material with a view to bringing to life the mark and aura of that age.

Gallery Hours/Duration: Monday-Friday: 12:00-21:00, Saturday: 10:30-14:30, clοsed on Sunday
