At least 6,000 deceased people have received notices to pay their single property ENFIA tax. Oftentimes, they are called to pay taxes that their next of kin have also been notified to pay. The problem is due to the fact that Taxisnet, the Finance Ministry’s digital platform, is not aware of over 5,500 instances of death because the next of kin have failed to inform the Tax Office due to negligence or because the Tax Office has failed to complete the procedure required for someone to appear as deceased in the tax files or because there are some instances of people who purposely fail to declare a family member’s death in order to collect pension payments.

A tedious procedure is required to inform the tax office of the death of a family member charged with ENFIA tax. Paperwork required includes:
* a death certificate
* a certificate from the municipality showing death that requires the signature of a lawyer and two witnesses
* a copy of the deceased’s will and photocopy of police identification
