How Super-Computer Daedalus will Transform our Lives

The Ministry of Digital Governance announced the Open International Tender for the project

Newsroom June 26 07:50

The Ministry of Digital Governance announced an Open International Tender for the “Development of a New High-Performance Computing System” project, involving the Daedalus supercomputer. This move positions Greece to join the exclusive club of nations with immense computing power.

With the Daedalus supercomputer, Greece will be at the forefront of the 4th Industrial Revolution, advancing applications in Artificial Intelligence and enhancing its digital services. The supercomputer, to be housed in the Lavrio Industrial Park, has a total budget of 41.9 million Euros, financed by the National Recovery and Resilience Plan “Greece 2.0,” the European Union – NextGenerationEU, the Public Investment Program, and the European High-Performance Computing Joint Undertaking – EuroHPC JU.

The tender aims to supply and install cutting-edge computing equipment, storage, and software at the new Data Center in the Technological Cultural Park Lavriou. This initiative is part of the strategic enhancement of Greece’s public digital infrastructure, a key action in the Digital Transformation Bible 2020-2025 of the Ministry of Digital Governance.

The Daedalus supercomputer will be the largest in Greece and one of the most powerful in Europe, expected to rank among the top 500 systems globally for performance (TOP500) and energy efficiency (GREEN500). Its architecture will support diverse applications, combining high-performance computing with Artificial Intelligence, machine learning, and big data analysis. It will significantly impact research in personalized medicine, fire protection, spatial planning, smart mobility, and autonomous vehicles.

Powered by renewable energy systems and featuring modern cooling solutions, Daedalus will maintain low energy costs and minimal environmental impact. It will have a power exceeding 60 Petaflops, making it 120 times more powerful than the current ARIS supercomputer. The hybrid design will incorporate high-density central processing units (CPUs) and accelerator units.

The installation of the supercomputer will take place at the Technological Cultural Park of Lavrio, in a space provided by the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA). The area’s preparation involves a collaborative effort between the experienced staff of EDYTE – GRNET, elite architects from NTUA, and executives from the Technological Cultural Park of Lavrio.

The tender submission deadline is 02.09.2024, and it will be conducted electronically through the “Prometheus” system of ESIDIS at www.promitheus.gov.gr, with tender code: 352893. The National Technology and Research Infrastructure Network (EDYTE S.A. – GRNET) under the Ministry of Digital Governance will oversee the development and operation of the Daedalus supercomputer.
