The fire that broke out on Sunday morning in Keratea, southwest of the Plaka settlement, is out of control. The conditions under which ground and aerial forces are operating are particularly challenging due to strong winds that are creating multiple hotspots.
The situation is serious in Agios Konstantinos, with firefighting forces fighting a massive battle to prevent the fire from reaching the Sounion National Park. Aerial units are making continuous drops, while residents are assisting the efforts in every possible way. The fire does not have a single front. By just before 4 PM, there were four different hotspots among houses and fields, with wind gusts exceeding 9 Beaufort.
“The situation is very difficult, we are fighting a big battle,” stated Lavreotiki Mayor Dimitris Loukas to the Athens-Macedonian News Agency (AMNA). “Houses have burned, that is certain, but all forces, both ground and aerial, are making great efforts to stop the fire from spreading to the park. The wind is very strong and is constantly creating hotspots,” he said, adding that the airbase is not in danger.
