Ambitious employees receive a lot of advice early in their careers about how to advance. A common piece of advice is: Be one of the first to arrive at the office and one of the last to leave to show your boss that you are committed to your work.

As CNBC reports, Brianna Doe used to feel this way. When the marketing professional started her career about a decade ago, she often arrived at the office early and worked long hours “to show that I have the drive and motivation and that I want to grow within the company.”

Doe was eager to show her supervisor and people in other departments that she could “go the extra mile” and felt that “a great way to do that is to be the first one to show up and the last one to leave,” she tells CNBC Make It.
