Mitsotakis at the illumination of the temple of Poseidon: Transforming the columns of the past into the foundations of tomorrow

The lighting of the iconic Temple of Poseidon at Sounion was inaugurated today by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, in the presence of the Minister of Culture, Lina Mendoni, and guests from Greece and abroad. The event featured musical direction and artistic supervision by Stavros Xarchakos

The lighting was designed by internationally renowned Eleftheria Deko, known for her award-winning work on the Acropolis and the opening ceremony of the 2004 Athens Olympic Games. The new lighting highlights the archaeological and architectural significance of the monument, giving it new dimensions.

A Journey into Light, with Eleftheria Deko & Stavros Xarchakos

The Ministry of Culture first illuminated the Temple of Poseidon in 2004 for the Athens Olympics, offering a new visual experience and enhancing Sounion as an international destination for thousands of visitors. Two decades later, technology has made great strides, and the old lighting system had become outdated and worn by time. The willingness of METLEN Energy & Metals and its president, Evangelos Mytilineos, to take on the lighting design and project execution reaffirms their commitment to the preservation and promotion of Greece’s cultural heritage, according to a statement from the Ministry of Culture.

Mitsotakis: The New Lighting Enhances the Monument, Preserving Its Integrity

“With emotion and great joy, I stand before one of the most iconic landmarks of our homeland. A uniquely beautiful structure that has stood for nearly 2,500 years as a timeless beacon of history and culture. Sounion has always been a passage from Asia to Europe and a gateway to the Greek mainland,” said Prime Minister Mitsotakis.

“A modern lighting system will literally allow it to shine brighter. The temple will continue to symbolize Attica’s eternal ties with the sea and inspire every visitor,” he added.

“This intervention was necessary, as the new lighting upgrades the monument, protecting its integrity by highlighting its geometry, its surrounding walls, and the rocky terrain. Parallel works at the entry and exit points will ensure safer access. We will be able to admire the grandeur of this site from every angle, whether viewed from the sea or the land. Greeks can achieve great things, transforming the columns of the past into the foundations of tomorrow.”

Mytilineos: Modern Lighting Unveils New Architectural Dimensions

“The power of human creation is beautifully showcased today. The modern lighting, respectful of the monument’s value and beauty, reveals new architectural dimensions that will certainly impress every visitor. This unique sight will travel online to every corner of the world, reminding us that beauty has its roots here in Greece,” said Evangelos Mytilineos, president of METLEN Energy & Metals.

“As Metlen, we feel a deep responsibility to contribute to preserving and developing our cultural identity. Our sponsorship of this project is part of our broader commitment to sustainable development and social responsibility. Great care was taken to ensure that the technical study respected the monument’s environment, ensuring the natural beauty and historical significance of the Temple remain unchanged,” he added.
