“The Two Faces of January” advertise Greece as “The Talented Mr. Ripley ” advertised Italy”, according to an editor in Traveller website, at the same time when the Guardian newspaper speaks of a movie “bathed” in Greek light which combines crime, glamor and sexual intrigue.

The Independent, places the film’s director Hossein Amini, in the club of great filmmakers who were able to carry Patricia Highsmith’s novel on the screen, along with Alfred Hitchcock and Anthony Minghella. For Amini, the film which was shot in Athens and Crete was a lifelong dream: “Twenty five years is half my life. When I was a student in University, I kept dreaming about making the novel into a film. It was a difficult but fascinating journey that finally helped me understand the value of patience”, stated the director.

The film takes us back to 1962, and follows a beautiful American couple traveling to Greece. The leading roles are played by Viggo Mortensen and Kirsten Dunst, who are supposed to be in our country for a leisure trip. In reality, however, the man is trying to escape because he is wanted in his own country for a series of scams. The case involves a third person (Oscar Isaac), who has suspect “connections”.

The international media make a specific reference to the “sunny” film footage of the Parthenon, the Roman Forum and the archaeological site of Knossos. Athens and Chania of Crete, as depicted by the film lens are expected to draw many tourists, like “The Talented Mr. Ripley” did for southern Italy. Critics speak of a film which grips the watcher. The film premiered yesterday in the US and will open in Greece, in June.
