Revealing ELSTAT survey on family budgets in Greece - At 1,685 euros per month the average annual household spending on purchases in 2023

Newsroom September 27 01:40

At 20,223.36 euros (1,685.28 per month) was the average annual household spending on purchases in 2023, recording an increase of 5.3% at current prices compared to 2022, according to ELSTAT.

50% of households spend more than 1,315 euros per month.

Households living in rented accommodation spend on average 16.8% of their budget on rent.

The share of average spending on food and non-alcoholic beverages and housing by households in the poorest 20% of the population is 55.8% of household expenditure, while the share of the richest 20% of the population is 24.8%.

Average annual household spending in 2023 appears to be down by 20.5% compared to 2008.

In more detail:

The average annual household expenditure on purchases in the year 2023 was 20,223.36 euros, recording an annual increase of 5.3% compared to 2022. At constant prices, the average annual household expenditure increased by only 1.7% or 347.16 euros, due to the effect of inflation, according to the Consumer Price Index year 2023 which was 3.5%.

The largest share of the expenditure of the average household budget, at current prices, concerns:

foodstuffs and non-alcoholic beverages (20.7%),
housing (14,1%) and
transport (13.1%),

while the smallest share of expenditure (3.4%) is on education and alcoholic beverages and tobacco

The survey shows that, apparently due to the revaluations, between 2022 and 2023 there was a decrease in consumption (in quantities) in all food items: olive oil, -13.6%, alcoholic beverages -12.7%, Fish, -11.8%, rice, -10.7%, cheese, -6.1%, meat -6.1%, eggs, etc.
