Newsroom September 30 08:25

A massive fire that broke out on Sunday in the Rozena area of Corinthia continues to devastate the region for a second consecutive day. Speaking to the Athens News Agency, the mayor of Xylokastro-Evrostini, Vlasis Tsiotos, described the situation as “tragic,” with numerous active fire fronts and a large portion of the mountainous region already destroyed.

Tsiotos highlighted that firefighters and residents have been battling flames within villages, where fire, firefighters, and locals coexist in a desperate struggle. “Tonight is critical to prevent the fire from spreading to the last unaffected areas, specifically Karya and Trikala,” the mayor stated.

Regarding damages, the mayor reported extensive destruction of agricultural lands, though relatively few homes have been lost to the blaze.

Smoke Reaches Athens – Schools Closed
Smoke from the fire has traveled as far as Athens, affecting visibility and air quality. Due to the ongoing emergency, the municipality of Xylokastro-Evrostini announced that all schools will remain closed on Tuesday (October 1st). “The safety of students and residents is our absolute priority,” the announcement read, urging parents to stay informed through official communication channels.

32km Fire Front – Two Firefighters Injured
According to reports from state broadcaster ERT, the fire front now extends over 32 kilometers, advancing towards Trikala in Corinthia. Active fronts are also moving towards Xanthochori and Vrysoules.

The Fire Department reported that two firefighters were injured during operations. One suffered minor respiratory issues, while the other sustained an eye injury from a water jet. Despite these challenges, firefighting efforts continue with significant resources deployed on the ground and in the air.

Firefighting Efforts Intensified
A total of 390 firefighters, 16 forest commando units, 115 fire engines, and volunteers from local Civil Protection groups, supported by water tankers and heavy machinery, have been mobilized. Aerial firefighting efforts involved 24 aircraft, including 12 helicopters, operating until dusk.

Authorities also issued evacuation orders through the 112 emergency system for residents of Lagkadaika, Spartinaika, Pellini, and Ano Kallithea to evacuate towards Sofiana and Rethi.

Casualties Reported
Tragically, two men, aged 35 and 40, lost their lives when they were surrounded by a fire near the village of Elliniko in Xylokastro. The two men had been trying to reach a friend’s barn when the fire overtook them. One of the victims was a father of three, and the other was expecting his third child in a few months.
