The message that “the NHS is changing” was sent on Thursday morning by Kyriakos Mitsotakis in his remarks following his visit to the Agia Sophia Children’s Hospital.

During his visit, the Prime Minister also toured the 600-square-meter Emergency Department (ED), which is currently undergoing renovation. These renovations include improvements to the building infrastructure and equipment. The work is expected to be completed next month.

Kyriakos Mitsotakis had the opportunity to speak with doctors, nurses, and parents of children being treated at the hospital about the projects already completed and the efforts to further improve patient care conditions.

In statements after his visit, the Prime Minister emphasized that “the NHS is changing.” He added, “Without hiding the problems we inherited, we have a 3-year strategic plan that will allow us to make infrastructure improvements and take advantage of private sponsorships.” Mitsotakis noted, “This hospital is a model of how the public and private sectors can collaborate.”

“The country needs significant benefactors who will contribute to public resources so that we can provide the services our citizens deserve,” Mitsotakis continued. He also mentioned that “the largest pediatric hospital in Thessaloniki, which is being constructed thanks to a private donation, is set to be completed by 2027.”

Referring to key projects funded by the Recovery Fund, including new sections of the pediatric hospital and upgrades to the ED, the Prime Minister said, “Anyone who visits the new departments and other floors will see that this hospital is on par with the most modern hospitals, offering high-quality medical services.”

Mitsotakis also acknowledged staffing shortages, saying, “We discussed the staff shortages, and we are doing everything we can to ensure that modern facilities are supported by the necessary personnel to function properly.”

He concluded by praising the staff: “Congratulations to all the staff, because despite the challenges, parents know that the NHS provides high-quality pediatric care.”

Health Minister Adonis Georgiadis echoed these sentiments, saying, “We informed the Prime Minister about this exceptional hospital that saves thousands of lives every day. The public can see that through the Recovery Fund, hospitals are changing, the NHS is changing, and new hires are coming.”
